Pirate Fun Facts

Here are a few fun facts about pirates that your little buccaneers might find interesting.

•Did you know that pirates have been around for more than 3,000 years? Pirates were described for the first time in Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey.

•Did pirates really keep parrots or other pets? The answer is: we don’t know. There aren’t any historical accounts that mention the pets of known pirates. However, there are fictional accounts of pirates with pets, and those may have some basis in fact. Parrots and other exotic animals may have been on board ship and may have been used for “booty.” The more exotic the animal, the more in demand and the more valuable the animal would be. A talking bird would probably fetch a nice sum. So…pirates may well have had parrots!
